In the winter, the same winds bring moist marine air inland, causing a higher than average annual rainfall. Since 1968, when official precipitation records were first kept for the local area, rainfall has averaged 20 inches annually.

At 1,200 feet elevation on the uphill slopes above the Pacific Ocean, the warm, sunny days of southern California are tempered by cool sea breezes.
